Skull Eater Slime
Can we all agree that Metal Slug has some of the best pixel art of all time?

The Metal Slug team is absolutely fucking crazy
No one said “hey, we need you guys to create like a dozen giant intricately-animated bosses at a totally ridiculous resolution”
THE LIGHTING CHANGES WHEN THE CANNON GOES OFF AND EVERYTHING
THE PLAYER CHARACTERS ALL HAVE LITTLE RELOAD ANIMATIONS IN A GAME WHERE YOU NEVER ACTUALLY HAVE TO STOP SHOOTING
AND JUST IMAGINE THE THOUGHTS THAT WENT THROUGH THEIR HEAD WHEN THEY MADE THESE

JESUS
AND THAT’S WHY I FUCKING LOVE METAL SLUG.
I aspire to make pixel sprites this fucking awesome.
Indie game devs that make really shitty-looking pixel “art” need to take a lesson from Metal Slug. Pixel art in old games like that aren’t about “how minimal can the design be given the hardware provided?”, they were more like “with the hardware provided, how much can be done with it?”
I like to call this one, “learning how to do pixel art in order to one-up my classmates”.
These are some elements for a little parallax video I wanna make.

Just look at these. Ah! Mwah! (Kissing noises, copious drooling.) The shading is so perfectly done and the images are so dynamic, appearing to breathe and pulsate in even the smallest parts of the design. And who doesn’t get a thrill from robot crabs, reanimated brain robots, and giant, tamed eel monsters? Metal Slug: you were one of the best, babe.
